COVID-19 cases continue to explode in Shasta County.

Local health officials reported 323 new cases Tuesday — 214 on Sunday and 109 new cases Monday.

That’s 573 new cases since Friday and 987 new infections since last Tuesday, which represents a 28% increase over a seven-day period.

The county’s case count since the beginning of the pandemic is at 4,470. But November, by far, has been the worst month for Shasta County. More than half of all known illnesses, or 2,291 virus cases so far, were reported in first 23 days of November.

Meanwhile, the number of people in the hospital due to COVID-19 went from 51 on Monday to 43, health officials said Tuesday. There are six coronavirus patients in the intensive care unit, unchanged from Monday.

Forty-three people have died as a result of COVID-19 in Shasta County since the pandemic started.

“In Shasta County, people over age 65 represent 10% of COVID cases, but 75% of COVID deaths,” health officials said in a news release Tuesday. “Please consider this when planning holiday celebrations.”

New testing site coming to Redding

Shasta County is one of nine counties that is getting a new state testing site and it is expected to start operating next week, health officials said.

The site will be at the Boggs Building, 2420 Breslauer Way, in Redding and will be open Tuesday through Saturday by appointment.

There also will be a traveling test site that will alternate between the Health and Human Services Agency offices in the cities of Shasta Lake, Anderson and Redding.
